Life of late has had its ups and downs, and I have certainly been feeling both precarious and gloomy with the shortening days. However there are some exceptions, and earlier this week I was in London, for the launch of an important new project called the National Autism Taskforce at the House of Lords no less.My colleague and fellow Birmingham Alumnus Damian Milton sums up the aims in his speechUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22240007.post-49429705730948189872017-09-16T21:57:00.001+01:002017-09-16T21:57:27.408+01:00The world of the 1990'sI am a bit of a sucker for buying second hand textbooks from the charity shops, you can usually pick up something that might not be the latest edition, but certainly costs you a lot less than the present edition would. I picked up a couple today on psychology. I should have checked the publication dates of one of them a bit more carefully however. It is called "The Handbook of Clinical Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22240007.post-25601169227405548202017-08-12T20:50:00.001+01:002017-08-12T20:50:52.430+01:00What does an Academic without Portfolio do?
Continuing the theme from my last blog, what does an academic without portfolio do? Well it is like gardening I suppose, you can't really stand still or the weeds start to grow, and if you leave it too long you despair at the task ahead and lose the energy, so it gets worse.
So what are to be my continuing links with the world of academia, whilst I seek a post and funding?
Well I suppose Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22240007.post-68270027912520814702017-07-16T21:19:00.002+01:002017-07-17T15:18:41.688+01:00Academic without portfolio
It is just over a year since I graduated as a Doctor of Philosophy but my shibboleth access to online journals had been turned off almost as soon as I had submitted. My academic email lasted a little longer, but that was eventually replaced with an alumni one marking the transition from Doctoral candidate to what I have since seen described as "early career academic". That is to say I had Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22240007.post-83663446903942162232017-07-13T22:21:00.002+01:002017-07-13T22:21:43.900+01:00Disentangling diagnosis.<!--[if gte mso 9]>

I have always tried to be engaged in the community, even though this seems to be something that runs against the natural inclinations of an autistic person who finds engaging in social relationships somewhat difficult, but I have an over riding sense of moral responsibility, which I have to say I do not always enjoy.
After my mum died, I continued my involvement in those organisations and Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22240007.post-69810434845069698272016-05-16T22:07:00.002+01:002016-05-16T22:08:42.602+01:00A foreign country<!--[if gte mso 9]>

I would like to list the three greatest anxieties in my life, in order of the most troubling. This is not necessarily the way you might expect an autistic person to list them, but it is the way I Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22240007.post-7390593568791831572015-11-13T20:57:00.000+00:002015-11-13T20:57:06.668+00:00A memory of the Coventry BlitzIt is so long since I have blogged that I had forgotten this was still active at all.Anyway this is not a post from me, it is a post from my dad, 75 years ago tonight, as tonight is not an ordinary night, it is the 75th Anniversary of the Coventry Blitz.<!--[if gte mso 9]>

You may well see me on the allotment and think I look reasonably fit, but it takes it's toll and in the evenings, and often the mornings too, I am none too mobile. Sitting at my computer does not do me any better than walking to and fro on my plot, digging and weeding and whatever, because that does my back in as well.
None of it is getting any better, my years (I was 58 last week) and the Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22240007.post-75682595370142837582013-10-21T00:28:00.001+01:002013-10-21T00:51:38.401+01:00Peer pressure and the pressBeing the editor of a new academic journal is nothing like I thought it would be.
Whilst I set out from egalitarian principles I have come to realise that the exigencies of peer review means that I have had to reject more potential articles than I would have liked.
This partially explains the delay of the second edition (which is in preperation)

I have now ceased after I think 12 years (or maybe more, I told you I was getting forgetful) on the Council of the NASUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22240007.post-3461335597298250932013-09-18T11:43:00.001+01:002013-09-18T11:43:24.793+01:00Return to BloggingPerhaps now is the time to dip my toe back in the water.
I guess those turbulent waters have settled somewhat and maybe the fanatics and the fools have all left the blogosphere by now, leaving this sometimes fanatical and foolish blogger free rein to reign again. (have I got my spelling right there?)
Anyway I may well change my profile picture and other stuff but here goes.

Here it is a transcript of comments from Facebook. Needless to say nobody has phoned back yet!

Is it really three months since I last blogged? Evidently so. I suppose like a lot of ex bloggers I have migrated to Facebook, which I guess is a little bit selfish of me.
Well I have lost over a stone in weight since I last blogged here. Gotto be a reason for that. Oh yes I have been digging for victory haven't I? In case anyone has wondered what has become of me of late, I should say my life has entered a new stage, or rather it has recovered an old one.One of the things I very much missed after my mum died was the garden, where I used to take out my frustrations and grow vegetables in a very small urban plot, right in the centre of Coventry. However that is all history now, I have acquired an Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
